The Dan Shaw Road was formally named in July 2009 by Navan Town Council
Dan Shaw is a native of Castlecomer, County Kilkenny and moved to Navan where he worked as a trade union official with the then Irish Transport and General Workers Union and now Siptu. Siptu’s Meath headquarters is located on the road and is also named after Dan Shaw. The road links the Commons Road and the Trim Road. The name plaque was unveiled by Councillor Joe Reilly, Mayor of Navan, and guests of honour were the late Dan Shaws wife, Anne, and his daughter, Suzanne.
Lifelong friend, Michael Meally from Moneenroe, County Kilkenny knew Dan since he was a young man. “He played football in the fifties with my brothers Martin and Kieran with Railyard. He won minor county championships with Railyard in 1950 and won their first senior football championships with Railyard in 1951, 1952 and 1953. He also stood as a labour candidate in the early sixties and polled well. He also played hurling with Castlecomer. He worked in the mines and then moved up the country. I was stationed in Bray and we used to meet on a regular basis,” he said.
He joined the Irish Transport and General Workers Union as an official in 1956. He was appointed branch secretary for Sligo in 1959 and remained there until October 1965 when he took over as district secretary in Wicklow. In 1972, he was appointed national industrial group secretary for the construction, mining and some public service industries, and held this post until his untimely death on 19th August, 1976.
